This project involved the extension of an existing site operations office to accommodate growing operational needs. The new structure was designed as a portal steel frame building constructed on shallow foundations, seamlessly integrated with the existing facilities. The extension provides additional high-quality office space while maintaining full functionality of the live site throughout the construction period.
One of the most significant challenges was the presence of a dense network of underground services, including nine large pipes as well as numerous ducts and drainage lines. These constraints made excavation and foundation works particularly complex. The site remained fully operational during construction, adding further logistical and safety considerations. Maintaining continuous access and coordinating with multiple stakeholders was critical to ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing site activities.
The new extension was constructed using a portal steel frame system supported on shallow foundations. Due to the unpredictable location and depth of underground services, the foundation design was continuously reviewed and adapted on site. This flexible approach enabled the groundworks team to work safely around the existing services while ensuring structural integrity. In addition to the building structure, associated drainage systems and roadworks were carefully designed to respond to the space constraints and operational needs of a live site environment. The result is a robust, functional extension that meets the client’s requirements without compromising safety or existing infrastructure.
