The Deep Tube Upgrade Programme (DTUP) is a transformative infrastructure project that will introduce new state-of-the-art rolling stock to the Piccadilly Line, enhancing capacity, reliability, and passenger experience across one of London’s most critical transport arteries. To enable the deployment and operation of the new trains, significant upgrades and enhancements to existing underground infrastructure are required. Vertex has been appointed to provide civil assurance services for the proposed new installations as part of this vital programme.
Delivering civil assurance in such a complex and constrained environment presented several challenges. A key requirement was to provide real-time engineering input while simultaneously assessing and verifying the condition and capacity of existing infrastructure based on limited and often outdated record information. The work involved the design and validation of bespoke camera support structures, specialist frames to carry new cable routing, and numerous non-standard elements integrated into an already densely packed network of underground services.
Coordination was essential to navigate the spatial and logistical limitations of the London Underground network. Managing time, technical resource, and concurrent design streams was critical to achieving delivery of the large assurance package within tight programme constraints, all while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
Vertex’s scope included comprehensive civil assurance of the new infrastructure installations, ensuring compatibility with existing assets and compliance with London Underground’s exacting requirements. The team prepared and delivered detailed Cutting-Drilling-Fixing Logs (CDFLs) to the highest standard, forming a key part of the assurance documentation necessary for construction approval and implementation.
Working closely with the wider design team, Vertex played an integral role in enabling the successful delivery of essential upgrades to the Piccadilly Line. This programme represents a crucial step forward in modernising London’s transport network and supporting the capital’s long-term growth and connectivity.
