Redevelopment and refurbishment of a listed building

Sector:

Repurpose/ Refurbish

Architects:

Ettwein Bridges Architects

Client:

Les Ambassadeurs Club

Location:

London

Built over 150 years ago, this imposing Grade 2 listed building is located on a compact triangular site backing on to Park Lane, London. The Project involved the demolition of a single storey extension extensive basement area.

In order to keep the club operational during the development, it was essential to maximise the floor space that could be kept in use throughout the works.

A lack of record drawings was addressed by a comprehensive programme of opening up, investigation and strengthening works. These enabling works meant that many of the existing foundations and masonry walls could be retained and incorporated into the new scheme, thereby minimising the number of new columns required in the basement.

A largely single storey structural steel frame designed with a composite slab to support a roof level terrace, garden and planters. The use of a steel frame complemented the phasing of the works and the limited space available to the Contractor at any one time.
