The buildings are typically two storey steel frames with the GIS switch gear, control room and ancillary accommodation housed at the upper level and a lower ground cable reserve. All details of the building including foundations, steel frames, floors, roof, cladding, ceilings, internal layout and finishes were designed and detailed. Foundations solutions include piling and reinforced pad and strip bases detailed to allow subsequent installation of below ground cables.

Roads and drainage were designed to suit the often remote locations of the buildings with concrete, tarmacadam and compacted stone surfaces. Foul drainage was designed to discharge to cess or septic tanks with special drainage provision made for SF6 and battery acid washdown areas. Wherever possible SUDS principles were adopted for surface water drainage. Platform design including Cut & Fill and equipment foundations.
